What Is a Google Business Profile, and Why Every Doctor Needs One

A Google Business Profile is the free listing that appears on the right side of a Google search and as a pin on Google Maps — the box showing a business's hours, location, phone number, and reviews. For a doctor, it is often the single most-viewed piece of information a patient sees, ahead of any website.

Why it matters more than most doctors assume

When someone searches "[specialty] near me" or "[specialty] in [city]," Google's local results — the map with three listings — appear above the regular search results on mobile, which is where most patients are searching from. A doctor without a claimed, accurate profile is invisible in exactly the results a nearby patient sees first.

The common failure pattern

Most doctors in Pakistan fall into one of three situations:

  • No profile exists. Nobody has claimed the listing, so Google has nothing to show, or shows an unrelated hospital-wide entry instead of the individual doctor.
  • The profile exists but is wrong. An old clinic address, a phone number that no longer connects, or hours that haven't been updated since the listing was created — sometimes years ago, by someone else.
  • The profile is claimed by the hospital, not the doctor. This means the doctor has no control over it. If they change hospitals, the old listing keeps sending patients to the wrong address indefinitely.

What a correctly set up profile includes

  • The doctor's name and specialty, matching what's on their website exactly
  • Current clinic or hospital address, with the map pin verified against the real location
  • Accurate consultation hours
  • A category set to the actual specialty, not a generic "doctor" or "hospital" category
  • A route for patients to leave reviews, since review count and recency both affect ranking

It is not a substitute for a website

A Business Profile answers "where and when" — it does not have room for qualifications, procedures, or sub-specialty detail the way a proper website does. The two work together: the profile gets a nearby patient to notice you exist, the website gives them the reason to choose you specifically.

Setting one up correctly, and connecting it to accurate information elsewhere, is part of the foundation built into every setup. If you want to see whether your own profile currently exists and what's wrong with it, that's exactly what the free audit checks first.
